Have you ever wondered how caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies? Caterpillars go through many changes in their life, just like we do! Why did the caterpillar eat so much food? Why did he go in a cocoon and sleep? How did the caterpillar wake up into a butterfly? After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, you should have a little idea of the life of a butterfly! This web quest will help you understand the process of change from a caterpillar to a butterfly.
When you are done with this web quest you will have reflected on your knowledge of butterflies, researched facts about Eric Carle and research information about caterpillars’ life cycles. By learning about what caterpillars eat before they become a butterfly, you will reflect on foods you eat. The final project is creating your own butterfly that is hatching out of a cocoon.

Your First job is to create a K-W-L Chart about caterpillars. Your piece of paper should look similar to this:

Your next job is to learn a little bit about Eric Carle. Eric Carle is the author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Watch this short movie clip to learn more. Just click on the link that says “Watch” Then click on the movie called, “How a green worm became a beautiful butterfly.”

Task #3
Learn some interesting facts about caterpillars and butterflies by reading this website. Click on the purple links to learn about butterfly life cycles and basic information. When you are finished reading the information, recreate the life cycle of a butterfly on a piece of construction paper. Divide the paper into four sections by folding the paper in half and then in half again. Using those squares will show a part of the cycle in each box.

Task #4
The caterpillar ate a lot of food during the story, didn’t it? Do you eat that much? Keep a journal of the food you eat and beverages you drink for the week. Begin on Monday and end on Friday. Use regular notebook paper to begin your journal. You can create the cover page as you wish. Inside the journal should be six pieces of notebook paper. They should be stapled together like a book. Include breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. The last/sixth page should include a comparison of the foods you eat with the foods the caterpillar ate.

Topic - This web quest is called, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” It is based off of the Eric Carle story of the same name. This project involves several aspects. It deals with fictional and non-fictional activities.
Audience – The target grade for this web quest is first grade. It requires some parental help. The only help that should be given is for the reading material.
Purpose – This web quest is to enhance the reading of Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” This reading web quest integrates science, technology, writing and art.
How Does This Relate to the Curriculum? – This story fits into a mini unit the first grade does on Eric Carle. It also fits into the math curriculum by providing enrichment in telling time.
